Penderyn’s boutique distillery and visitor centre in Llandudno, North Wales opened in 2021 and now acts as a popular attraction for visitors to the area. The grade two listed building dates back to 1882 and has been converted from a former boarding school.

A sizable, fully glazed extension was added as part of the conversion which houses the centre’s shop and visitor area where tours are hosted.

With floor to ceiling glass windows providing plenty of natural light and stunning aesthetics, a powerful heating solution was needed that didn’t obstruct the seamless design of the building. Jaga’s Mini Canal trench convector was chosen as the best solution.

The Mini Canal is a shallow and versatile trench convector incorporating Jaga’s Low-H2O technology which cuts carbon emissions by 10%. The low water content, ultra-fast heat exchanger, reacts quickly to any fluctuations in temperature, ensuring maximum heat and low energy consumption. Its minimal recess depth of 9 cm makes it ideal for buildings with large windows to eliminate any potential drafts, without obstructing views.

BACKGROUND

The distillery and visitor centre was designed by Archer Humphryes architects who had a strong vision for the finished aesthetic; a dramatic and sleek interior with an element of heritage, clean lines, plenty of natural light and black fixtures and fittings for an industrial finish.

Jaga was identified as a potential supplier for this project by ESD, thanks to their experience in providing high output, energy-efficient LST radiators for a number of Welsh school projects.

The main contractor, MACP had also used Jaga products previously and they had proven to be reliable and easy to install.

THE CHALLENGE

The strong emphasis on interior styling and the main frontage of the distillery’s extension being fully glazed from floor to ceiling posed a challenge for heating the space. There was minimal wall space, high heat losses and solar gains, as well as the potential for condensation.

For the contractor, deadlines were tight and there was a lot of work to do by the planned opening date.

THE SOLUTION

ESD decided trench heating was the most suitable option to meet the requirements. Various products were evaluated, and Jaga’s Mini Canal came out on top, providing the highest outputs for the compact size, and was specified as a result.

For the contractor, Mini Canal’s matt black grille option was an additional bonus, negating the need to paint the grille to match the interior styling, saving time on site.

Another important benefit for the contractor was using Jaga’s trench installation service including site measure prior to manufacture and fitting to the finished floor.

Alisdair Mackay, Mechanical Director at MACP, said: "the Jaga installers came in and knew exactly what they were doing from the get-go. They did the full dry fit in two days, instead of our team possibly taking five days to install, so we’ve completed the job quicker and saved on labour."
